Electrical work in a Belgrade apartment is rarely just a new socket. If you buy an older apartment, you often inherit an installation from the Yugoslav decades, and if you plan air conditioning, an induction hob or a wallbox, you quickly hit the limit of the approved connected load. This article therefore focuses on what is different about hiring an electrician in Belgrade compared with the UK, the US or most of Western Europe: old wiring, the distribution board, the connected load with the grid operator and the documents you should have once the work is done. How to find and vet tradespeople in general is covered in Tradespeople in Belgrade: How to Find Reliable Professionals.
Older buildings: what is behind the walls
In older Belgrade apartment buildings you regularly come across aluminium wiring instead of copper. How widespread it is in a particular building can only be established on site. Aluminium is cheaper, but it has two drawbacks that matter in everyday use. It is a poorer conductor, so a wire of the same cross-section can carry less current. It also oxidises at the terminals and expands more when it heats up. Loose or oxidised terminals get warm, and that is exactly where scorching and burn marks develop. An electrician can tell immediately whether your apartment is affected by opening a socket or junction box: aluminium conductors are silvery.
Typical signs of an outdated installation:
- Ceramic screw-in fuses instead of circuit breakers in the distribution board
- No residual current device (RCD, known in Serbia as a FID-sklopka)
- Sockets without an earth contact in living rooms
- Few circuits for the whole apartment, so the kitchen and bathroom share the same circuit
- Warm sockets or switches, lights flickering when large appliances are switched on
An older installation is not automatically dangerous, but it is rarely designed for today's loads. If you are renovating anyway, the timing is right: chasing channels into walls and ceilings before the new plaster and paint involves a manageable amount of extra work. Later, in a finished apartment, replacing the wiring is considerably more expensive and messier. The wider differences between older and new buildings are described in New Build or Older Apartment in Belgrade: Pros and Cons Compared.
Partial upgrade or full rewire?
| Situation | Sensible solution |
|---|---|
| Copper wiring, but an old distribution board | New board with circuit breakers and an RCD (FID switch), have the wiring checked and tested |
| Aluminium wiring, no renovation planned | Inspect the terminals and repair them with suitable connectors, modernise the board, plan a full rewire for the next renovation |
| Aluminium wiring, renovation planned | Full replacement with copper and a new circuit layout |
| New high-load appliances planned | Check the connected load and the building supply line first, then plan |
Whether a full rewire of your apartment requires a notification to the municipality or a formal decision depends on the scope of the work. Please have this confirmed on site before work begins. Guidance on work that requires a permit can also be found in Hiring a Contractor in Belgrade: Costs and Process Explained.
The distribution board
The distribution board inside the apartment (razvodna tabla) is the heart of the installation. An up-to-date board has a circuit breaker for each circuit, at least one RCD and labels showing which breaker protects which room or appliance. Ask the electrician to provide separate circuits for the kitchen, bathroom, washing machine, air conditioners and, where relevant, an instantaneous water heater or a hot water tank (bojler). That way the whole apartment does not go dark when one appliance fails.
Separate from this is the meter cabinet, usually located in the stairwell. It holds the electricity meter and the so-called limitator, a current limiter that corresponds to the approved connected load. A private electrician may not simply work on the meter cabinet as they please; any work on the meter and limitator is the grid operator's responsibility.
Connected load: why EPS and EDS have a say
In Serbia, every electricity connection has an approved capacity (odobrena snaga). The grid operator is Elektrodistribucija Srbije (EDS), and the supplier for most households is Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS). The approved capacity follows from the number of phases and the fuse rating. In purely arithmetic terms, a single-phase connection at 25 amps corresponds to around 5.75 kW, a three-phase connection at 16 amps to 11.04 kW and a three-phase connection at 25 amps to 17.25 kW.
This matters for two reasons:
- Technical limit. If you want to run air conditioners in several rooms, an induction hob, an instantaneous water heater and a washing machine at the same time, a small connection will not be enough. The limitator then cuts the power. In older Belgrade apartments heated with night storage heaters (TA peći), the capacity question is particularly relevant.
- Cost. The approved capacity is billed monthly as a separate item on the electricity bill. A higher capacity therefore costs more even if you rarely use it. For three-phase household connections between 11.04 and 17.25 kW, a concession currently applies: 11.04 kW is billed, and in months with a consumption of no more than 350 kWh only 6.90 kW. This rule has been extended until 31 December 2026.
How to apply for more capacity
You apply for the increase to Elektrodistribucija Srbije using the application for a connection approval due to a change in capacity (Zahtev za izdavanje odobrenja za priključenje za promenu snage). Among other things, you need to attach proof of payment of the administrative fee and, where applicable, a power of attorney for your representative. Under the Energy Law, EDS decides on the application within 15 days. The decision (rešenje) sets out the technical conditions, the connection costs and the deadline for implementation. The limitator and, if necessary, the meter are then adjusted, and when switching from single-phase to three-phase, the supply line as well.
One point many people overlook: whether the line from the meter cabinet into your apartment and the building's riser can carry the higher capacity is a separate question. In old buildings these lines may have to be renewed first. Have the electrician check this before you submit the application, and for work on shared lines obtain the consent of the owners' association (stambena zajednica).
Dual-tariff meter
Many households have a dual-tariff meter (dvotarifno brojilo) with a cheaper night rate. This can pay off for night storage heaters, a water heater or charging an electric car. Which hours currently count as the low tariff, and whether your meter records two tariffs, is shown on the electricity bill or can be checked with EPS.
What the electrician should give you after the job
After any larger electrical job you should receive more than just an invoice. Ask in advance which documents the electrician will provide:
- Test report covering insulation resistance, the protective earth conductor and the tripping of the RCD. It shows that the installation was tested after completion.
- Circuit plan with the distribution board labelled.
- Photos of the open walls before plastering. This way you know later where the cables run and avoid nasty surprises when drilling.
- Guarantee on labour and materials, in writing.
For landlords in particular, such a report is valuable. It documents the condition of the installation in case of damage and makes communication with an insurer easier.
What to look for when choosing an electrician
For small repairs, a reliable sole trader is enough. For a full rewire or a capacity increase, you should ask more specific questions:
- Does the electrician or their firm have experience with aluminium installations and the appropriate connectors?
- Do they test after completion and give you a report?
- On larger projects, is an electrical engineer licensed by the Serbian Chamber of Engineers (Inženjerska komora Srbije) involved when design documents are required?
- Can they prepare the application to EDS or help you with it?
- Do they charge by the hour, per point (socket, switch, light fitting) or a flat rate?
Guide figures for hourly rates and simple jobs such as fitting a socket can be found in the price overview in Tradespeople in Belgrade: How to Find Reliable Professionals. For a full rewire, flat-rate quotes are only comparable with an exact list of points. Making good the plaster and paintwork is often a separate and significant item.
Common mistakes
- Ordering new air conditioners without checking the connected load.
- Clamping aluminium wires directly to copper. Contact corrosion develops at such junctions unless connectors approved for this purpose are used.
- Repainting the apartment and replacing the wiring a year later.
- Not having photos taken before plastering.
- Choosing an electrician on price alone and doing without a test report.
How Exgentum helps
For owners who live abroad, Exgentum coordinates electrical work in Belgrade with an English-speaking contact: from the first site visit to assess the installation, through quotes and the application to EDS, to final acceptance with a test report and photo documentation. On larger projects this is usually part of a renovation, which we describe in Renovation in Belgrade with an English-Speaking Contact.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether my apartment has aluminium wiring?
The electrician switches off the power, opens a socket or junction box and can tell from the colour of the conductors whether they are aluminium (silvery) or copper (reddish brown). Check several points, because earlier partial upgrades sometimes only renewed individual rooms.
Do I have to replace aluminium wiring immediately?
Not necessarily. What matters is the condition of the terminals and the planned load. During a renovation, replacement is the most sensible solution; without a renovation, a professional repair of the connections can be an interim solution.
How long does it take to increase the connected load?
EDS decides on the application within 15 days. How long implementation takes after that is stated in the decision and depends on whether only the limitator has to be replaced or a line has to be renewed as well.
Is a higher connected load worth it for a rented apartment?
Only if the equipment requires it. The approved capacity is billed monthly. For a typical rental apartment with air conditioners and an induction hob, a three-phase connection with 11.04 kW is sufficient in many cases; the electrician should check this against your appliances.
Can I hire my own electrician to work on the meter cabinet?
The meter and limitator fall within the grid operator's responsibility. Work there can only be done through EDS. Your electrician works from the distribution board in your apartment onwards.
