Many newcomers do not move straight from their home country to Novi Sad. They spend the first months in Belgrade or in a furnished temporary flat, find their actual apartment and then move a second time, this time within Serbia. Others have shipped their household goods with an international remover and only need someone in Novi Sad who carries the furniture up to the fourth floor and assembles the bed. For all of these cases, a local moving service is the right choice, not an international moving company.
This article covers the move on the ground: what moving companies in Novi Sad (selidbe) offer, how their prices are made up, roughly what a move from Belgrade to Novi Sad costs, what to watch out for in older buildings without a lift and which formalities follow once you have moved in, from address registration to electricity and internet. How to prepare a move from Germany, from deregistering your address to health insurance, is described in our checklist for moving to Belgrade (in German). It applies to Novi Sad just as well.
What a moving service in Novi Sad offers
Local moving companies in Novi Sad usually offer their services in tiers. They range from transport only with a driver to a full service with packing, dismantling and reassembly. There are no official price tables. The figures below come from an overview published by the newspaper Večernje novosti in August 2026, which compared prices by city.
| Service | Novi Sad | Belgrade for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Van with driver, no movers, within the city | 2,500 to 3,500 dinars | 3,000 to 4,500 dinars per trip |
| Van with two movers, smaller move | usually from 5,000 dinars | from 6,000 dinars |
| Full service with packing, dismantling, furniture protection, truck and larger team | no separate figure given | 15,000 to 35,000 dinars, usually set after a free on-site survey |
| Trip between two cities | van 50 to 70 dinars per kilometre, truck 80 to 120 dinars per kilometre | same as Novi Sad |
According to the same overview, prices in Novi Sad are on average 10 to 20 percent lower than in Belgrade. These figures are guide values from a media overview, not binding prices. Every company calculates differently, and for a specific move you need a quote.
What the price is made up of
The cost depends mainly on these factors:
- Vehicle: van or truck, depending on the volume.
- Staff: whether movers are included or you load and unload yourself with family and friends. According to the overview, labour is often the most expensive item.
- Distance: within the city usually a flat rate per trip, between cities by the kilometre.
- Lift: if there is none, carrying items up the stairs may be charged per floor.
- Furniture assembly: dismantling and reassembling wardrobes, beds and kitchens costs extra.
- Materials: boxes, film and padding are often charged separately.
- Bulky items: a piano, large wardrobes or heavy appliances increase the effort.
Sample calculation: moving from Belgrade to Novi Sad
Belgrade and Novi Sad are around 90 kilometres apart. According to the Novosti overview, trips between cities are usually charged for the distance in both directions, so the empty return trip is included. For a simple example, this gives around 180 charged kilometres.
| Vehicle | Price per kilometre | Trip cost for 180 km |
|---|---|---|
| Van | 50 to 70 dinars | 9,000 to 12,600 dinars |
| Truck | 80 to 120 dinars | 14,400 to 21,600 dinars |
On top of that come the movers, possibly daily allowances for the staff travelling with the vehicle, surcharges for floors without a lift, assembly and materials. The calculation is a rough guide, not a quote. Ask the company directly whether it actually charges for the return trip and whether it offers a flat rate for trips to Novi Sad. If you only have a few pieces of furniture, a van with two movers is often cheaper than a truck that travels half empty.

Old buildings without a lift, residential blocks and the city centre
Novi Sad is flat, but its apartments are not always on the ground floor. How demanding a move becomes is often decided by the building.
Older buildings in the centre and in Podbara
In the city centre and in Podbara there are many older buildings with only a few floors, often without a lift. Every floor above the ground floor means carrying items up the stairs, and this may be charged per floor. Before the move, measure the stairwell, the landings and the door widths. A sofa that fitted easily through the hallway back home will not always make it round the corner of a narrow old stairwell.
Residential blocks in Liman, Novo naselje and Detelinara
Even where the large residential blocks have a lift, it may be too small for wardrobes and sofas. Measure the cabin and the door before you plan with the moving company. Ask the building manager whether the lift may be used for moves and whether there are rules for this, such as fixed times or protective panelling. Let your neighbours know briefly if you will be occupying the lift and stairwell for several hours.
Parking and access in the city centre
A large part of the historic centre is a pedestrian zone, and vehicles cannot get as far as the front door. In the red parking zone in the city centre, parking time is limited to two hours, according to an older report by 021.rs citing the municipal parking company JKP Parking servis. Whether and how you can get an exemption or reserve a space for a move is not published in a uniform way. Clarify this in advance with the moving company, which knows the access routes, and if necessary directly with Parking servis. Longer carrying distances from the loading point to the front door increase the price.
Comparing moving services in Novi Sad: how to recognise a reliable company
In Novi Sad, alongside established companies, there are many small providers with a single van. For small moves this can be good value. To avoid surprises, clarify these points before you place the order:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Will someone come for a survey, or is there a video survey? | Without a survey the volume is estimated, and on moving day extra charges follow. |
| Flat rate or hourly billing? | With hourly billing you also pay for waiting times and detours. |
| Are floor surcharges, assembly and materials included? | These items often make the difference between two quotes. |
| Who is liable for damage, and is there insurance? | With small providers this is often unclear. |
| Is there an invoice or a fiscal receipt? | Only with a receipt can you claim for damage and prove your costs. |
| How is payment made, cash or bank transfer? | Paying cash without a receipt puts you at a disadvantage in a dispute. |
Only compare quotes that are based on the same list of furniture and boxes, otherwise you are comparing different moves. According to the Novosti overview, the simplest way to save money is a different one anyway: get rid of what you no longer need before the move. Less volume means a smaller vehicle and less working time.
If you are not on site yourself yet
Your household goods often arrive before you move in yourself, or the remover only delivers to the front door. In that case you need a person with a key who lets the company in, checks the delivery, photographs any damage and notes it on the delivery note. Agree this in writing and give the moving company the name and phone number of that person.
After the move: registering your address in Novi Sad
As a foreign national, you must register your address in Serbia with the police (prijava boravišta). How registration works in general is explained in our article on registering your address in Serbia. For a move within Serbia, three points matter.
Who registers and how quickly. Under Article 111 of the Law on Foreigners (Zakon o strancima), anyone who accommodates a foreign national for payment or takes them in must register them within 24 hours. Anyone not accommodated in this way registers themselves, within 24 hours of entering Serbia. For a move within Serbia, Article 110 sets its own deadlines: with temporary residence (privremeni boravak) you report the new residential address within three days, with permanent residence (stalno nastanjenje) you report the new place of residence within eight days. A stay of no more than 15 days at another address does not count as a change of address.
Where. Registration takes place at the duty service of the police station responsible for the area where the apartment is located, or at the competent unit of the Novi Sad Police Administration (Policijska uprava u Novom Sadu) for foreigners' affairs. Please check in advance with your landlord or directly with the Police Administration which office is responsible for your address. Alternatively, electronic registration is possible via the eUprava portal.
Requirement for online registration. Private individuals can only register a foreign national electronically at an address whose property is entered with the cadastre authority RGZ and whose address is recorded in the address register. For new buildings that are not yet fully registered, this can be an obstacle. In that case, the only option is to go to the police.
If you already hold a residence permit, ask during registration whether any further information about the new address is required. You will also need your new registration for your bank, the tax authority and other bodies that hold your address on file.
Transferring electricity, water, heating and internet
After moving in, the bills should be in the right person's name and the meter readings should be documented. On the handover day, photograph all meters with the date. This is the simplest protection against bills for your predecessor's consumption.
| Area | Supplier in Novi Sad | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity | EPS | Report the change of user at the counter or by phone; for a change of owner, EPS requires an application, ID card or passport and proof of ownership. As a tenant, agree with the landlord whether the bill stays in their name. |
| Municipal services | JKP Informatika handles the joint billing (objedinjena naplata) for part of the municipal services | Check whose name the account is in and whether there are arrears; for questions, use the Informatika contact centre. |
| District heating | Novosadska toplana | For apartments with district heating, clarify how it is billed and who pays. |
| Internet and TV | private providers such as mts, SBB or Yettel | Check availability at the address, compare contract terms and cancellation conditions, book the installation date early. |
As a tenant, in many cases you do not need to change the contracting party, but rather a clear rule in the lease on who pays which bill, and an overview of how you can prove it. As an owner moving into an apartment you have bought, however, you should have all contracts transferred to your name. Have any outstanding amounts owed by the previous owner confirmed in writing before the handover.
It pays to order internet early, because without a connection on moving day many newcomers lack their most important work tool. Ask the provider for the earliest installation date. If you work from home, plan for a mobile data package for the first few days.
